" John R. (Jack) Williams rose from extreme poverty to prominence as a radio announcer adn writer, mayor of Phoenix, and three term Republican governor of Arizona. Elected governor in 1966, he servd until 1975 and was the first governor chosen for a four year term. A dedicated political conservative, he has been a firm believer in the power of hard work and individual iniative to achieve personal goals.
Williams was born October 29, 1909, in Los Angeles. Moving to Phoenix with his family, he attended Phoenix Union High School and Phoenix Junior College before joining the staff of Radio Station KOY in 1929. He was one of Arizona's most listened to radio voices for four decades and conducted the popular "This and That" commentary which he always opened with the words: "It's another beautiful day in Arizona. Leave us all enjoy it!" Williams was vice president of the Phoenix Housing Authority in 1944-1947, president of the Phoenix Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1946, and a member fo the Phoenix City Council. He was elected mayor of Phoenix in 1956 and served two terms.
He ran on the Republican ticket for governor in 1966, was victorious, and devoted his efforst to achieving orderly economic growth for the state. When he annouced that he would not sek re-election as governor in 1974, the Arizona Republic commented editorially that he had served the state well. "He is a team player who believes in appointing good men to top posts and then allowing them to run their departments." A master communicator, Williams has been finding more time since leaving public office to write and to speak. His most recent book, "From the Ground Up," is a collection of stories about Arizona Mining. He is a lay leader in the Episcopal Church, and a man who has been unselfishly involved in community service."
