"In 1877 while in pursuit of Apache Indians three army scouts camped in Mule Pass. One was John Dunn, who at that time found samples of rich ore. Since his duties would not permit him to work on any claims, Dunn grubstaked a man named George Warren, sending him into Mule Gulch. Waren seems to have been a first-class alcoholic as well as a pick-and-shovel man. To these two men belonged the Copper Queen Mine, so named because of the fame of the SIlver King Mine in Pinal County, whic it was hoped the Copper Queen would rival.

In 1880 a small eastern firm known as Phelps Dodge and Company sent Dr. James Douglas (df. Douglas) to purchase copper prospects in Arizona. He bought property close to the Copper Queen. The richest ore lay where the Copper Queen and Phelps Dodge properties joined. Rather than pursue litigation over the ores, the two companies merged as the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company.

Among the men who promoted the Copper Queen were Ben and Lewis Williams. A shareholder in the company was Judge DeWitt Bisbee, who was also the father-in-law of one of  the brothers. The Williams brothers and Judge Bisbee became interested in the property when Edward Reilly, who had an option on the Copper Queen, went to San Francisco where he enlisted the aid of John Ballard and William Martin to supply funds to purchase the mine. Bisbee, Martin and Company undertook to develop the Copper Queen. Judge Bisbee never visited the town which bore his name. In 1929 Bisbee became the seat of Cochise County."
