"Senator William A. Clark(Montana, 1901-1907) bought the United Verde mines property in 1884. He later proposed erecting a smelter, and suitable land was found on the Jordon Ranch, where ground was broken in 1910. The town of Clarkdale was laid ou in 1914. The first furnace began operating May 26, 1915. Along with Jerome, Clarkdale went out of existence with the closing of the mines. Several years later Earle P. Halliburton bought it, but sold out later to produce cement. It is now largely a retirement community. P.O. Est Nov. 4, 1912, LaMont Coleman, pm.
