Yaqui Indians fled from Mexico at the turn of the century to avoid persecution under Porifirio Diaz, who sought to exile them from northwestern Mexico to tropical Yucatan. Among other villages, the Yaqui established Guadalupe, named for the Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness saint of Mexico.
