Patagonia

"Bob Lenon conjectures that Emory of the Boundary Survey in 1855 reported killing a grizzly bear near Nogales and that seeing its huge paw print may have led to the name Patagonia. This location is not to be confused with taht of Mowry Mine and its Patagonia Post office in 1866. Contemporary Patagonia is connected with the history of Crittended. A review of its history is necessary to understand the history of Patagonia. Rollen Richardson (b. July 10, 1846 Shippenville, Pennsylvania; d. February 6, 1923) in 1883 bought the Monkey Springs Ranch as well as squatters' rights at old Crittenden (on the railroad) and called the entire area Pennsylvania Ranch. In 1890 with his partners L.V. Gormley and Alex Harrison, he was running twelve thousand cattle, but a three-year drought forced them out of business. He sold in 1901 to Vail, Gates, and Ashburn, but reserved five hundred acres of land wher Patagonia now is. In 1896 he had decided tomove the community at Crittenden to the then-marshy area of Patagonia and proposed calling his new town Rollentown or Rollen after himself. The residents, who had no choice about moving, balked at the name and chose Patagonia after the name of the nearby mountain. As they had to sign the post office petition, Patagonia it was whether Richardson like it or not. PO Est December 15, 1899, Mrs. Mamie A Chalpin PM. Incorporated 1948.
