Yarnell Peeples Valley

"Harrison Yarnell (d. Aug. 11, 1916), located and worked the Yarnell Mine, which he sold c. 1882. The Yarnell family was among the earliest to settle in this region. The first post office, called Yarnell, was discontinued. When it was re-established in 1928, postal rules called for it to have a new name and it was called Peeples Valley. The reason becomes clear when it is realized that the present Yarnell Hill was Antelope Hill, the scene of a very rich gold discovery in the early years by Abraham Peeples and others. However, because everyone locally referred to teh place as Yarnell, the name was changed to Yarnell. The name also refers to the hill itself and to a sprong. PO Est as Yarnell Oct 18, 1892, Frank McKean PM, disc April 30, 1911; reest as Peeples Valley, Aug 6, 1928, Mrs. Susie McCrea PM. Named changed to Yarnell December 1, 1933."
